How do I become a member of NTNUI Sailing?
You can find more information about how to become a member here. This is also where you pay the membership fee.
Can I join the club at any time of the year?
If you’re new to sailing, you must join the club by attending one of our two annual beginner courses (spring or fall). Check-out sessions for experienced sailors are held at the same time. These weekends fill up fast, so if you miss the sign-up, you’ll need to wait for the next one.
What are the different sailing levels in NTNUI Sailing?
At NTNUI Sailing, we have three levels that help you grow as a sailor — and yes, it’s absolutely possible to reach the top! All it takes is time, dedication, and a good attitude.
🟢 Yngling Group – Where everyone starts
Once you complete the beginner course or check-out, you’ll automatically join the Yngling group.
This gives you access to two training sessions per week, social events, and internal regattas. It’s the perfect place to build confidence, make friends, and learn the ropes. You will also be able to us the Rent-a-boat feature at any time when they are available.
🔵 Unge Lovende – The next step up
If you consistently show up to trainings, help out with the club (dugnad/volunteer work), and take part in the social events, you may be invited to join Unge Lovende if there is space.
As part of this group, you’ll also be able to train with the Melges sailors on Mondays — a great way to take your sailing to the next level.
🔴 Melges Group – Our top level
With enough commitment and practice, you can become part of our Melges group, which trains three times a week and competes in national regattas.
This group is for highly motivated sailors — and we fully believe that anyone with the right drive and attitude can get there.
When is the beginners’ course?
We host two beginner courses per year – one in the spring and one in the fall. These courses are the main entry point for new sailors and are required if you have no prior sailing experience.
Check-out sessions for experienced sailors are held during the same weekends.
The courses fill up fast, so be ready to sign up as soon as registration opens.
New information and sign-up details will be posted on our Facebook page – make sure to follow us!
I didn’t get a confirmation email – am I in the beginner course?
Unfortunately not. The course fills up very quickly, and spots are only confirmed by email. We wish we could include everyone, but we’re limited by the number of boats and instructors. We hope you’ll try again next time!
Do I need to bring my own life jacket?
No, we have life jackets in our sailing shed. Find the code to the shed on Spond.
Can I book a boat? How does it work?
Once you’ve completed the beginner course or check-out, a new menu option called “Rent a Boat” will appear. There, you can book one of our four Yngling boats. After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details you need.
You’re also welcome to bring friends, even if they’re not members of NTNUI Sailing!
Can I race in regattas as a beginner?
Yes! Just sign up in Spond, and you’ll be able to join the Wednesday regatta with the Yngling.
Wednesdays feature the Wednesday regatta organized by Trondhjems Sailing Association. The meeting time is 16:45, with the first start at 18:00. The regatta is open to both the Melges and Yngling group. We have registered three Melges24 and four Ynglings. The course and start details are published by TSF on the same day.
More information about the Wednesday regatta can be found here: Trondhjems Sailing Association
Are there social events in the club?
Yes, absolutely!
Throughout the sailing season, we usually host “aftersail & quiz” on Thursdays – and you don’t need to have sailed that day to join. It’s a great chance to hang out with the crew and get to know the members of the club.
Committees also host their own social events during the season, so joining one is a great way to connect with others and stay active in the club. Wondering what a comitee is? Click here.
In the fall, we go on the legendary Tautra trip, where we bring all our Melges boats and a larger sailboat Steinbiten(Hanse 370e) to the island of Tautra. We rent a big cabin by the sea and enjoy a weekend packed with fun activities – both on and off the water.
During the off-season, we still stay active with aftersails, quizzes, and our annual Oppdal trip, where we rent a cabin and do all types of skiing.
Although national competitions are primarily for sailors in the Melges/unge lovende group, these events are also highly social. If you’re motivated and active in the club – both on the water and off – there’s a clear path forward to becoming part of these groups and joining in on the fun.
Does volunteering affect my chances of joining higher levels?
Yes! Being active in the club through volunteering (dugnad) shows commitment, reliability, and team spirit – all important qualities for joining higher-level groups like Unge Lovende and Melges.
